Athens is another city that it is very easy to see on your own from a cruise ship - it's just 7 stops and 20 minutes on the Metro to travel from the port of Piraeus to the city centre.

We alighted the Metro at Monastiraki Station, and walked through the back streets, past the Tower of the Winds towards the rear entrance to the Acropolis.

Once there, we headed up to the top and saw what was left of the Parthenon.  The museum there was closed for relocation, so having absorbed the atmosphere we headed back down to the city.  As all of the other historic parks and sites seemed to close at 3pm for some reason,  we simply wandered around the streets for a while before heading back to the ship.
