Once again, we had visited Rome on a number of previous occasions.  This time we decided to concentrate on the old(er) part of the city, and to give the Vatican area a miss, not least because it was the Wednesday morning Papal audience and the square would have been packed.  We caught the early local train from the port of Civitavecchia to Roma Ostiense, and took the Metro to the Colosseum.  We then more or less followed the first half of this itinerary to Piazza Venezia, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps before catching the train back from Stazione San Pietro.  Along the way, we pretty much stopped where we fancied, wandering in to any open church and having lunch in a small bar just off the main tourist area near Piazza Navona.  A highly enjoyable day.
