We had already visited Athens in the past, so this time we had two specific objectives in mind.

Once again, we caught the local metro (instructions here) from the cruise port to Athens city centre (an all day ticket covers most buses and the metro).  Our initial visit was to the New Acropolis Museum, which was not quite open last time we visited Athens.  This is a fascinating and well designed museum if you are at all interested in Hellenic Greek history, although it does have a very pointed viewpoint on the Parthenon Sculptures (also known as the Elgin marbles) that are currently in the British Museum!  No photos are allowed in this museum.

After this air-conditioned museum visit, we braved the heat of the day to make for the Panathenaic Stadium, that hosted the 1896 Olympic games.  A fascinating place, but very hot with the early afternoon sun reflecting off all the white marble, so we simply caught the metro and bus back to the ship.
