Starư Smokovec is a small resort town in the Slovakian High Tatras.  Whilst the town has little in itself, it is ideally placed for access to the mountains.

We spent 2 nights here, and in the intervening day caught the cable car from the neighbouring resort of Tatranska Lomnica to Skalnate Pleso, a high mountain lake.  There the group went 2 separate ways - some (including Kate) caught the cable car and train back down to the hotel, whilst the rest of us walked back down through the mountainside.  The walk took around 3 hours, plus a lunch stop for a very unimpressive goulash at a mountain cafe, and was surprisingly strenuous, due not only to the steep downhill gradient but also the number of rocks that required leaping over.  Still, the views and fresh air made it well worthwhile.

The day, of course, finished with another highly entertaining dinner ...
